I'm planning to switch from Windows 11 back to Linux. I previously tried using Arch Linux with the GNOME desktop environment, but I encountered issues with my NVIDIA GTX 660, especially using the 470-series drivers. I'm looking for recommendations on which Linux distribution works best for stable NVIDIA GTX 660 (with those 470-series drivers) and can handle games like Hearts of Iron 4.

It's more about finding the right driver than the distro itself. You might want to look into tweaking or changing your compositor for better stability or performance. Just my two cents!

Linux Mint is another solid option! It's user-friendly and often recommended for those transitioning from Windows.

You'll definitely want to stick with X11 for your setup. NVIDIA really only started improving their Wayland support after version 495, so your GTX 660 will run smoother if you go that route. Don't forget to check how your gaming performance is faring under those drivers!

If you're having issues with the 470 series drivers, what exactly is going wrong? Like, if the desktop is glitching out, it could be due to Wayland not playing nice. But if it's just game performance, you might want to check your Proton settings on Steam. And since you're running older hardware, consider using XFCE over GNOME; it’s lighter.
