I'm currently using a TM Phantom Spirit 120SE and I saw a video from Thermalright suggesting to use nine dots around the IHS when applying thermal paste. I've never done it that way before, and I'm feeling a bit lost just staring at my CPU. I know there are loads of techniques out there, but this has made it even harder for me to choose the right method! Any tips?

Honestly, just go for a big blob or an X shape right in the middle. The pressure when you attach the cooler will spread it out evenly. You can't go wrong with too much thermal paste, just be cautious of using too little because that can lead to overheating.
Sometimes I just spread it out a little if I'm feeling up to it, but often an X works perfectly too. Keep it simple!
I've had success with five dots—one bigger in the center and four smaller ones around it. This method worked great for my 9800x3d with a Hyper 212 Black cooler!
I usually make an X and sometimes add some tiny dots in between the lines of the X for extra coverage. It seems to work well for me!
If I want to reapply because I think I didn’t put enough, should I wipe the old paste off first and then apply fresh? What’s the best way to do that?

I used the same technique with my 9800x3d, and it's been running nice and cool!
