What’s the best way to print and scan documents on Linux?

I'm using Linux Mint 22 and I have an HP OfficeJet 5200 series printer. I've been trying to get the right software to scan documents from a recent trip. Coming from Windows, where everything was pretty straightforward, I'm finding it a bit tricky to get set up on Linux. Any tips on printing and scanning in this environment?

I don't get why some suggest Mint for beginners; Ubuntu offers a lot more support and documentation. If you're still keen on Mint, definitely check out Simple Scan for your scanning needs. Setting up printers can be a hassle at first, but you'll get the hang of it!

Printing on Linux is usually straightforward since the drivers for Linux, iOS, Android, and Mac are often included by default. They use something called IPP (Internet Printing Protocol). Just make sure your firewall isn't blocking IPP, mDNS, and SNMP. If your printer is connected to the same network, it should be available to print automatically. If needed, you can manually add it. For scanning, check out programs like Simple Scan or XSane in your software store; they're generally effective for scanning tasks.

When scanning, I'd recommend trying out Simple Scan. It's easy to use and handles most scanners well. If you're having issues, you might want to download the driver from the HP Linux Imaging and Printing website. Just a heads up, if you're new to Linux, switching from Mint to Ubuntu might give you a smoother experience since it has a bigger community and more documentation.
