Hey everyone! I'm a high school student planning to move from Windows 10 to Linux before support completely ends in October. Since I'm totally new to Linux, I'm looking for a user-friendly distro to get started with. My setup is a Lenovo ThinkPad with an Intel Core i5-4300U and 8 GB of RAM. I'm eager to learn more about Linux, particularly since I'm studying programming and getting into OSINT. I'd also like to use it for casual web browsing and everyday tasks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Linux Mint is a solid choice for beginners—you'll find it user-friendly and it has a great community to help you out. If you want to do some programming, consider installing Geany for editing code. For a terminal-based option, vim can be handy too. Dive in and enjoy learning!

I've heard good things about Geany, it really simplifies things for new users! I think Mint will be perfect for you.

If you’re looking for other options, consider Ubuntu or Fedora as well! They’re pretty popular among newcomers. Just remember to explore the different software available; Synaptic is great for managing packages, especially in Debian-based distros like Mint and Ubuntu. Have fun exploring!

Thanks for the advice! Synaptic sounds like it could really help when I start installing new programs.

I think starting with Linux Mint is your best bet. It's designed for ease of use, and your laptop can handle it just fine. If you ever get curious about how things work under the hood, you might want to give Arch a shot later on—it's a great learning experience, but probably best to start with something simpler first.

Definitely starting with Mint! I’ll think about Arch later once I'm more comfortable.

Mint, Ubuntu, or Pop OS are all awesome picks for a first-timer. Plus, I found some YouTube tutorials that can guide you through the installation process: 1. [Tutorial 1](https://youtu.be/n8vmXvoVjZw), 2. [Tutorial 2](https://youtu.be/_BoqSxHTTNs) and more. They make it super easy!

Those tutorials look helpful! I’m going to check them out before I jump into the installation.
