Why Am I Not Getting Better Performance with My PC Compared to My Console?

I've recently transitioned to PC gaming from consoles and have heard many people say PCs are superior, especially when it comes to performance. However, I'm not seeing much of a difference. My setup isn't quite hitting the 120-144fps mark at 1080p for games like Destiny 2, Elden Ring, and Predecessor, and I typically max out around 90fps. My current build is: B450 Tomahawk PRO MAX motherboard, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU, RTX 3060 GPU, 2x16GB RAM, and a 2TB SSD. Am I just expecting too much from my hardware, or are there game settings I should tweak? Also, I'd love any recommendations on upgrades.

First off, what monitor are you using? Also, is your SSD an NVMe or just a regular SSD? Your RTX 3060 is decent, but it’s a bit underpowered for hitting those higher fps rates, especially in demanding games like Elden Ring. What settings are you running those games on? Let’s get to the bottom of it!

Thanks for the info! I've got one NVMe for the system and another SATA SSD for games. My monitor is compatible with higher refresh rates.

Just to manage expectations, a 3060 is a bit less powerful compared to the GPUs in current gen consoles. While PCs can be faster, a rig that costs the same as a console won’t usually outperform it. If you're aiming for high fps, you're looking at needing a stronger GPU. But, around 90 fps is still pretty solid for most games, especially if it feels smooth!

Thanks for breaking that down! I didn't realize how similar the performance could be.

You might want to consider some software like Lossless Scaling from Steam—it’s great for stabilizing your fps. Also, double-check that your frame rate isn't capped at 90 and ensure your monitor can support over 90Hz. If you're getting 90 fps and it's choppy, that tool could make a significant difference!

I think my monitor can go up to 144Hz, but I'll definitely check out that software!

Honestly, the RTX 3060 is what's holding you back. You’ve got a solid CPU with that Ryzen 7, but your GPU isn't enough for those high fps targets, especially if you’re hoping for more than what the Series X can deliver. Consider upgrading to something like a 5060 Ti or even a 5070 for better performance. Also, remember that Elden Ring is capped at 60 fps, so that might not be the best benchmark to rely on.

I was told to prioritize upgrading my CPU first, since I used to have a Ryzen 5 3600X.

Don't stress too much about reaching those high frame rates. If you're consistently above 60 fps, you're doing well! For competitive multiplayer, higher fps helps, but for single-player games, it's not always noticeable. Sometimes, it feels like people focus on fps too much instead of just enjoying the game.

That’s a fair point! I just want to avoid feeling like I wasted my money.
