Why aren’t my Windows Server 2016 systems receiving updates?

I've got several Windows Server 2016 instances, both physical and virtual, and some of these servers have been running since 2019 while others are newly set up. Recently, I've noticed that they aren't being offered any updates. Every time I check, it just says, "Your device is up to date." I installed the previous Service Stack (KB5062799), but I'm still not seeing the August Cumulative Update (KB5063871). I even checked for the September update, thinking it might show up since it's a shorter turnaround, but still nothing. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I feel kind of isolated with this problem and can replicate it on brand new Server 2016 installations.

I felt curious and checked four of my Windows Server 2016 systems, and they all have the August Cumulative Update installed with the September update available. Maybe there's a specific setting or issue on your servers that needs addressing?

Thanks for checking! I’m really puzzled because I’ve got everything set up, but still no updates coming through.

Mainstream support for Windows Server 2016 ended in 2022. Upgrading might be your best bet because even though the extended support runs until 2027, it could lead to issues down the line. Don't get too comfortable with this setup!

Your answer isn't quite right. Being out of mainstream support means no new features for future software targeting that OS, but Windows Server 2016 is still slated to receive necessary updates until January 2027.

Extended support for Windows Server 2016 actually runs until January 2027. I checked today and saw that it was still receiving WSUS updates, so you might want to ensure that your settings are correctly configured to fetch updates from the right source.
