Why do some links in Reddit’s app open in Chrome instead of the built-in browser?

I recently encountered a situation where clicking on a BBC link in a Reddit thread opened the link in both the internal browser and then quickly switched to my phone's native Chrome browser. Has anyone figured out how this happens? Additionally, I'd love to know if it functions the same way on iPhones. Sometimes, certain configurations on devices lead to imperfect displays in Facebook's embedded browser, making this functionality really useful. Any insights or tips would be appreciated!

I tested it on my S24 ultra and saw the same behavior! The link opened in the built-in Reddit browser and then jumped to Chrome. It seems like Reddit is detecting the user agent from your device and triggering a link that possibly has a 'target="_blank"' attribute, which could explain why it opens externally. So, it might be a combination of how the link is structured and the user agent it detects.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in this! It does sound like it might just be a technical quirk with how links are handled. I'm planning to do a little testing myself to see if I can replicate it. Thanks for confirming!
