Why Does ChatGPT Keep Repeating Itself and Making Things Up?

I've noticed a frustrating pattern with ChatGPT when I'm looking for information. If I ask it for a list of video games featuring dragons, for example, it initially gives some good responses, but when I request more or specify that I don't want repeats, it often circles back to the same suggestions. That's not even the worst part—sometimes it fabricates information about games that don't exist! For instance, it once claimed there's a game called 'Tale of a Dragon: Wing Symphony.' This looping behavior continues no matter how specifically I phrase my request, and it leaves me wondering: will it ever stop lying, repeating itself, and just making things up?

I think this is just how its algorithms work. When it doesn't have enough data, it fills in gaps with what sounds right. I get the frustration, but labeling it as lying isn't exactly fair since it doesn't have intent; it's just trying to be helpful in a limited way.

Fair point! But the result can still feel like deception. When someone gives you bad info and doesn't say 'I don’t know,' it feels dishonest. It should at least be able to clarify when it's unsure!

Honestly, I think AI like this would benefit a lot from being able to just say 'I don’t know' instead of trying to fabricate answers. It would save everyone a lot of grief! Plus, clearer boundaries on what it can and can't retrieve would really help users too.

Totally! If it could just admit when it's at a loss instead of spinning random facts, it might actually build more trust with users.

It seems like ChatGPT isn't actually lying but rather trying to find a way to give you something, even if it just repeats what it already provided. It’s programmed to respond based on patterns and not really have that depth of awareness, so it tends to rely on familiar data when pressed for more. It’s definitely a weird quirk of AI that can get really frustrating!

Exactly! It's like it's in a loop and can't break out of it. Even when you tell it what you're looking for, it still defaults to past answers. It'd be so much better if it could at least acknowledge when it doesn’t know the answer.

The way AI models like this are designed means they don't really have the capability to search right now or pull in real-time data, which limits their responses. It can feel frustrating, especially when the answers start to loop or create new, fictional content. I guess it’s a common drawback of using AI for specific queries!

That definitely explains a lot. It’s a limitation in how they operate, but it's something that needs tweaking for sure. People just want accurate info!
