Why Does Linux Mint Freeze When I Use Steam?

I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint, and for the first little while, everything was working smoothly. However, now, every time I try to download something on Steam, my system freezes completely—no keyboard or mouse input will work, and even the usual shortcuts like CTRL-ALT-DEL don't respond. I believe my system and Steam are fully updated, and I ended up disabling both Steam and Discord from starting up with my computer since they seem to cause so many issues. Can anyone offer some straightforward help?

Have you considered adjusting your file indexing settings? You might want to set it to only index file names or turn the feature off completely and see if that improves your system stability while using Steam.

What exactly is a file indexer? How do I change those settings?

Remember to exit Steam when you’re not using it; that can help a lot. Also, how did you install Steam? It's best if your games are installed on a Linux-compatible partition as well. Another thing to check is if your PC is overheating. When was the last time you cleaned it out internally?

You might want to check your system logs by running "sudo dmesg" in the terminal. It should provide some error messages that could help identify the problem. Also, it would help if you shared details about your hardware, like your motherboard, CPU, memory, and GPU. That way, folks can better assist you!

I tried running "sudo dmesg" but it just flooded my screen with a lot of technical jargon. The only thing that seemed weird was some red text saying: ‘hidpp_root_get_protocol_version: receiver protocol error 0x08.’ What does that mean?

I don't even know what a motherboard is! Can you clarify?
