Why does my HP laptop keep switching between 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi?

I recently got a new HP laptop with a Realtek 8852BE wireless card, and I've noticed it keeps switching from 5GHz to 2.4GHz. Is it a good idea to disable the 2.4GHz option in the device manager to force it to only use 5GHz? What kind of issues could that cause? Is this a common problem? My laptop is right next to the router, so the Wi-Fi signal should be strong. I didn't find any preferred settings for 5GHz in the device manager, and I've already updated the drivers to the latest version.

Could you clarify what you mean by 'close to the router'? Is it in the same room or behind a wall? If there's no barrier and it’s just a few feet away, disabling 2.4GHz might not be the best idea. You could also try turning off band steering on your router to help it stick to 5GHz.

Yes, disabling the 2.4GHz band can lead to issues. If your laptop keeps switching to 2.4GHz, it might be because it’s not getting a strong enough 5GHz signal. If you turn off 2.4GHz completely, you could lose your connection entirely if the 5GHz signal drops out. It’s safer to leave it on unless you know what you're doing.

Sometimes being too close to the router can interfere with the connection. If you disable the 2.4GHz band, just be aware that it could lead to connection drops when the 5GHz signal weakens. Test it out and see how it goes!

Higher frequencies like 5GHz can struggle with obstacles, so even though you're close to the router, your laptop might still have a weak signal. It's likely reverting to 2.4GHz for a more stable connection, even if it’s a bit slower. If there are no physical barriers and it still has issues, you might have a problem with your Wi-Fi card or interference close by.
