Why does my Lenovo laptop shut down and overheat after a short time?

I'm having trouble with my Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5—it randomly shuts down after running for just 10 to 30 minutes, and it overheats during this time. Pressing the power button doesn't help, and the screen stays black. It usually resumes normal function after about 30 minutes, often with a Windows update installed afterwards, though this doesn't happen every time. The battery is nearly full before it shuts down, and it ends up empty after this occurs. I've only had this laptop for six months and have been careful with it, using it mainly for school tasks without downloading anything beyond Microsoft apps and documents. What could be causing this problem, and how can I resolve it?

Before it shuts down completely, does the fan get louder, or does it just get hot? If the fans aren't spinning when the laptop turns off, that might be the issue. They should kick in when it’s overheating, so if they aren’t working properly, it could lead to more severe problems.

The fan starts spinning when it overheats, but it doesn't seem to work before the shutdown. I'll look into that!

It sounds like the fan might be clogged. If you feel comfortable doing so, try opening up the back of the laptop to check for dust or debris. This could be causing it to overheat. Just use some canned air to blow out anything loose and wipe the rest down with a lint-free cloth.
