I've noticed that my year-old PC emits a strange plastic smell, and it's quite noticeable even when the computer is turned off for days. The heat this summer has made the smell even stronger—it's not sharp or overpowering, but it's definitely there and wafts from about half a meter away. It used to have a slight odor at the beginning, but now it's become really prominent. I don't think the smell is coming from the power supply unit; it seems more likely to be from the motherboard. I checked for any leftover plastic foils or covers, but didn't find anything. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Sometimes that lingering burnt plastic smell doesn’t fade easily. You know, did you double-check that you removed the plastic cover from the CPU cooler? That's an easy mistake to miss, and it could definitely lead to funky smells!
You should inspect for bad capacitors, as they can produce a unique smell that’s different from burning plastic, but still could be concerning. Check for any that might be bulging or leaking on your motherboard. And don’t forget to clean out any dust—burning dust can create nasty odors too!
I checked the capacitors and they all look fine, and I get what you mean about dust; I’ll clean it out just to be safe.
It’s totally normal for electronics to off-gas VOCs, especially in the heat. From my experience, even new gear or items exposed to warmer temps can release smells. You might just be more sensitive to it, like I am with fragrances.
Make sure to open your PC and check for any plastic that's possibly melting or peeling. It's worth investigating!
If you have an ozone generator nearby, that can make plastics smell bad too.
Yeah, I checked again and I definitely removed it. I wouldn’t describe the smell as burning, more like a vague plastic scent. It’s not strong enough to be uncomfortable.
