Why is Fortnite Using Low GPU Even with a Good CPU?

I was testing my system to identify the bottleneck before upgrading. I have an R7 5800X CPU and an RTX 3070 GPU. In Baldur's Gate 3, the GPU was the bottleneck, but in Fortnite, it seems like the CPU and memory are holding things back. Oddly, my GPU usage was around 0% even when my CPU usage was only about 60-80%, and my temperatures were decent, sitting in the mid-60s. I also noticed that my FPS was capped at 165, and it dropped to around 110 when I set shadows to 'high'. I'm curious if there's an underlying issue with Fortnite that's preventing my GPU from being utilized properly, especially since memory was about 80% used even with shadows off. Any advice on whether to upgrade the CPU or GPU would be appreciated!

You mentioned you checked HWinfo? Low GPU usage can sometimes be a glitch. My 3080 often showed 0% usage on other monitoring software, but HWinfo gave the true figures. Just keep in mind that if you’re at 1440p resolution, you might want to consider upgrading your GPU for better performance.

What monitor are you using? The resolution and refresh rate can greatly impact performance. Given that you're on a 1080p 165Hz setup, I'd focus on upgrading the GPU first since your CPU is already quite strong. In the end, it helps to balance performance across the board!

Don't just focus on the usage percentages for the CPU or memory. If your GPU is below 90% utilization, it likely means the CPU is holding it back. I'd recommend checking how your GPU performs; anything above that and it might be an issue with the game or settings. If you're at 1080p with a 165Hz monitor, it is more about balancing your components, and upgrading the GPU could be the way to go.

It sounds like your CPU could be bottlenecking in Fortnite. It's pretty normal for an 8-core CPU like the 5800X not to hit 100% usage as most games don't fully utilize it. You should check which cores are being used to get a better idea. Also, the 3070 is solid for competitive gaming like Fortnite, and DLSS can help if you're GPU-bound. If you're looking to upgrade, go for a better CPU, something like an x3D or the AM5 platform.

It's also important to consider your RAM. What's the capacity and speed? Low RAM performance can definitely cause issues, and you might not see your CPU or memory usage spike when gaming. It's worth checking out.
