Why is my monitor refresh rate dropping even with stable frame rates?

I'm struggling with micro stuttering issues on my PC that seem to pop up randomly during gameplay, making it really hard to enjoy anything. I'm using an MSI Afterburner overlay while playing Dead by Daylight, where I typically set a max frame rate of 120 fps and have a 1% low of about 90 fps. However, I've noticed that the refresh rate on my monitor drops unexpectedly to anywhere between 40-80 Hz, even though my FPS remains stable at 120 fps or around 109 fps. I always keep Vsync off and FreeSync on. This has been an ongoing issue, and I'm hoping someone has a solution for it! Here are my specs for reference: LG 27GX790A B1440p 480Hz OLED monitor, Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, 9070XT GPU, PRO-X670-P-WIFI motherboard, and 32GB DDR5 RAM clocked at 6000MHz.

I totally get what you mean! I used to have the same problem. One thing that helped me was lowering my refresh rate to match my max FPS in some games. It made the experience much smoother for me, especially in Final Fantasy 16. Give that a shot; it might work for you too!

Not a stupid question at all! You mentioned you have an OLED monitor, so does it have VRR (Variable Refresh Rate)? I found that enabling or disabling this option can sometimes resolve similar issues. If you've got it on, try turning it off and see if that makes a difference. Good luck!
