Will Switching Domain Hosts Affect Our Email Access?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into building a website for a small nonprofit and could really use some guidance. Currently, their site is hosted on a platform similar to Wix or Squarespace, and we have a domain through GoDaddy. I've successfully built the new site on WordPress and it's all set to go. The only thing I'm worried about is connecting the domain. Their email service is through Google Workspace, and I'm concerned that switching the domain to point to the new WordPress site will disrupt their email access. My understanding is that since we are not changing the email host, just the URL direction, it should be fine, but I want to make sure I'm not missing any important steps to keep email access uninterrupted. Am I on the right track? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You're spot on! As long as you keep the MX records pointing to Google Workspace the same, switching the domain hosting shouldn’t affect email access. Just be sure not to change any MX records or anything that looks like email domain settings during the transition. Before making changes, it’s a good idea to take screenshots of the current DNS settings so you have a backup plan. Also, it really helps to have access to your DNS provider account that isn’t linked to the email domain for emergencies. Good luck!

Totally agree! And don’t feel bad for asking—getting it right before you switch is crucial.

Just a heads up to check on DNS propagation! It can take some time for DNS changes to spread. If you copy the correct MX records for Google Workspace to your new host's settings, you shouldn't have any issues with email. Plus, it might help to set up the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records to bolster email deliverability.

You don’t need to worry at all about losing access to emails. Just ensure that when you switch providers, you update your MX record to point to Google’s email server. As long as those records are correct, you’re all set!
