I recently got laid off from my work-from-home job, and now I need to return my work laptop, which is secured with BitLocker. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to wipe my personal files before it got locked. I chatted with my HR representative, and they assured me that the laptop will be wiped clean before it goes to another employee. However, I'm still worried about my personal data being exposed. The laptop has a removable NVMe hard drive, so I'm thinking about buying a new one to keep my old one with my personal data. Is that a bad idea? What should I do? Thanks for any advice!

You definitely shouldn't keep the old drive. Your employer won't dig through your files unless they have a reason to, but taking the drive could get you in trouble. It’s best to just return the laptop as is; trust that they’ll wipe it safely. Companies usually don’t want to deal with leftover personal data, so they’ll reimage it for security reasons.
Thanks for the insight! I just want to make sure everything’s secure.
Honestly, returning it without keeping the drive is the safest route. If you tamper with the hardware and it breaks, you might be held responsible for damages. Besides, it’s company policy to wipe the device. They don't care about your personal data as long as you didn't give them a reason to get involved.
Right? Better safe than sorry.
Good point! I’ll follow the company rules.
Been in IT for a long time, and trust me, once they get that laptop back, they will wipe everything and reimage it for the next person. They do this for security reasons. Your data is encrypted anyway with BitLocker, so you’re probably safe. Just return it without worrying about the personal files.
Exactly! They just want to get the device back and reimage it quickly.
That makes me feel a bit better, thanks!
Yeah, just hand it back. It’s good to know nobody is likely going to snoop!
