Experiencing Slow Internet Speeds While Working from Home

I've been working from home and recently ran into a frustrating issue with my internet speed. For my job, I need at least 20 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload according to the speed tests we are supposed to use. After running several tests, including rebooting my modem and disconnecting from the VPN, my speeds have been really inconsistent—sometimes as low as 1 Mbps! My ISP's speed test claims my speeds are fine, showing around 500 Mbps, but that doesn't match the work-required test results. The ISP mentioned there are no outages, but I'm stuck between their claims and my work's requirements. I also recently replaced my modem and Ethernet cable due to a different issue, but now I'm facing the possibility of switching ISPs, which could mean being out of work for two weeks while I wait for a new setup. Time's tight since rent is due soon and I can't afford to miss pay if I can't troubleshoot this in time.

You mentioned you’re on Ethernet, which is good, but sometimes the quality can change based on what ports you're using. It might be worth testing another port on your modem or even checking your Ethernet cable for any damage. Plus, if your work's VPN is causing the slowdown, that could be an issue on their end.

It sounds like you might want to isolate the problem first. Try connecting only your computer directly to the modem without anything else connected. Run a speed test to see if that changes anything. Sometimes the issue can be on your end with the device, not the ISP. If that doesn’t work, you could call your ISP back for further assistance; a different tech might give a better explanation of your situation.

Have you tried connecting a different device? If you have another laptop or even a phone, run a speed test on that to see if it’s just your work computer causing the slow speeds. If everything else works fine, then it might be a problem with your work device. Also, being on a VPN can typically reduce your speeds, especially if your connection is already borderline. Keep that in mind!
