I'm comparing two bundles for a long-term gaming and productivity PC. One includes a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, GeForce RTX 5080, and 32GB of RAM. The other costs $400 less and includes a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Radeon RX 9070 XT, and 64GB of RAM.
I play everything from indie games to demanding AAA titles and want the system to remain capable for years. I also do 1080p video editing, Unreal Engine development for college work, and rendering. I'm mainly targeting 1440p gaming, although I may move to 4K later.
For this mix of gaming and development work, would the RTX 5080 bundle provide the better overall experience, or would the stronger CPU and extra memory in the cheaper bundle be more useful?

The cheaper bundle makes sense if Unreal Engine development, rendering, and CPU-heavy editing are a major part of your use. The extra cores and memory can help with compiling, light baking, multitasking, and larger projects. However, check whether your editing or rendering software benefits from CUDA or specific NVIDIA features. If it does, the RTX 5080 may be worth prioritizing despite the weaker CPU and lower RAM capacity.
For gaming, I’d choose the 9800X3D and RTX 5080 bundle. At 1440p and especially 4K, the GPU usually has the biggest impact, and the 9800X3D is already more than capable of keeping up with an RTX 5080. The RX 9070 XT is still a strong card, but the 5080 should give you more headroom in demanding games, ray tracing, and path-traced titles. You can always add more RAM later if your projects actually need it.
The 9950X3D is better for heavily multithreaded work, but it doesn’t provide a major gaming advantage over the 9800X3D. Likewise, 64GB is useful for large Unreal Engine projects, heavy multitasking, and some editing workloads, but 32GB is still enough for most gaming at 1440p or 4K. Unless your development projects regularly use more than 32GB, the stronger GPU is probably the better choice.
Both systems should be excellent, so the decision comes down to what you do most often. For maximum gaming performance, especially with future 4K gaming, take the RTX 5080 system. For a $400 saving plus more comfortable multitasking and Unreal work, the 9950X3D and 64GB system is still a very capable option. If you choose the 5080 bundle, upgrading to 64GB later is usually straightforward.
Gaming is probably the biggest priority, but Unreal Engine work is significant because of my college projects. I’m also not sure whether my rendering tools specifically need CUDA.
