Would This Setup Make Someone Untraceable Online?

Hypothetically, if someone wore a mask and ordinary clothes, bought a laptop with cash in a distant store, avoided carrying other devices, and stayed out of camera view, could they browse the internet without being identifiable? They would configure and use the laptop over public Wi‑Fi, pay cash if necessary, disconnect it afterward, remove the battery, and hide or eventually destroy the device. Would this make the person effectively invisible, or could they still be traced through other evidence and mistakes?

The physical precautions are mostly excessive and still leave plenty of weak points. A more realistic privacy approach would involve understanding what information the operating system, browser, network, and websites expose, then minimizing unnecessary accounts and identifying data. Even then, privacy is not the same as guaranteed anonymity—mistakes, unique browsing habits, account reuse, payment records, and service-provider logs can all create links.

What kinds of practical privacy measures would reduce those links without going as far as burying or destroying the computer?

No, that would not guarantee invisibility. Cameras might capture the person before or after the purchase, along their route, or near the public Wi‑Fi location. Investigators could also correlate timestamps, travel patterns, Wi‑Fi records, laptop activity, website logs, browser fingerprints, and other behavioral clues. Avoiding one form of identification does not eliminate all the others.

So even without a phone or other personal device, the surrounding cameras and online activity could still provide enough clues to connect the activity back to them?
