I'm currently setting up some new wiring in my home, which gives me the option to install new electrical outlets. I don't plan on having a TV in my living room, so I'm wondering about router placement. Is it okay to set my router and modem on a shelf in the basement, two floors below where I might use them? I have a TP-Link router rated for 1GB and some hardwired cameras that need to connect. Alternatively, I could place the router in the coat closet on the first floor. What would be safer and more effective for Wi-Fi coverage?

With three levels, using some Wireless Access Points (WAPs) will definitely help. If you're considering the basement, just keep in mind that it might struggle to reach two floors up, especially if there are concrete barriers. The coat closet on the first floor would provide better coverage since it's more central and safer as long as it's ventilated. Plus, your hardwired cameras won't be impacted by the router's location.
You're welcome! Glad to help.
If you're struggling with Wi-Fi coverage, you can always add an access point in areas where the signal is weak. So the placement of your router isn't as critical because the access point will help extend the coverage. Researching network ports could be beneficial for you!
Thank you very much for responding. I will now go and research what a network port is. Sorry, I'm new to tech and this is really for home use. Lol
You might want to consider setting up a mesh network. Having a couple more access points that are interconnected will ensure you get a solid connection throughout your home. Just check out online sources for recommendations on the best mesh networks available; they can really enhance your Wi-Fi experience.

Thank you:)
