Can I Restore a Higher iOS Backup to a Lower iOS Device?

Hey everyone! I recently attempted to restore an iOS 15.8.4 backup from my Mac to my iPhone 6, which is running iOS 12.5.7. I followed a tutorial that allowed me to enable the restore option, but I keep running into issues during the process. Initially, I was blocked from restoring because my iPhone was too outdated compared to the backup. Now, I can start the restore, but it always fails with a message saying that iTunes can't backup because the iPhone was disconnected, as well as a prompt on my iPhone stating that there was a problem during the restore. I've tried numerous troubleshooting steps like changing ports, restarting devices, and making sure my macOS is up to date, but nothing has worked. Has anyone faced this issue and found a solution? I'm starting to lose hope but thought I'd check in here for any fresh ideas!

There's no magic solution for this issue. The backup and device combinations you’re trying just don’t align, so it's usually a no-go. You might need to consider other options for getting your data back.

Unfortunately, you can't restore backups from a higher iOS version to a much older one. Apple’s restrictions make it nearly impossible, and the workaround might only partly help. Best bet is trying to find an iPhone that can handle the newer backup instead!

Downgrading iOS that significantly is definitely tricky. From what I understand, even with the method you tried, it might just not work due to Apple locking down the system. This level of downgrade is usually unsupported, and there likely isn't a reliable way to restore that backup to your iPhone 6 without first upgrading its software. Hang in there!

That’s what I feared too. The workaround had me hoping it might work, but it’s looking like a dead end. Maybe it’s time to consider an upgrade?
