Choosing Between CPUs for a Minecraft Server and Gaming

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from a 12600k and I'm deciding between the Intel Core Ultra 265kf and the AMD 7800X3D, both of which are around the same price. I plan to host a heavily modded Minecraft Forge server, which will usually run in the background—likely with a maximum of 10 players using about 8GB of RAM. I also want to play other games simultaneously without sacrificing performance. I'm more focused on maintaining consistent performance rather than maximum potential. Which CPU would be better at keeping the server running smoothly and avoiding issues like TPS hitching and low frame rates in other games? For reference, my other setup includes a 6800XT OC GPU, 32GB of DDR5 CL30 RAM, and a 2TB Cardea A440 NVMe drive.

When hosting a Minecraft server, you'll want a CPU with strong single-core performance. The 265kf shines here with its better single-core performance, which is crucial for server stability. Although the 7800X3D may give you better overall gaming performance, the 265kf could help your server run smoother, especially with games running in the background.

That's a good point! I mainly play other games while the server's up. I really want to make sure the games run well without affecting the server. I've had dramas in the past with lag.

Consider using Process Lasso to manage your CPU cores effectively. You can assign the server to utilize 6 to 8 E-cores, leaving the higher frequency P-cores free for your games. This setup could help you get the best of both worlds!

I’d lean towards the 7800X3D for sure. Despite Minecraft not being the most optimized game, its extra cache can significantly improve Java-based performance. Plus, the 7800X3D is with the AM5 socket, giving you more upgrade options in the future since Intel's path seems limited.

Definitely true! That extra cache really makes a difference when it comes to performance in Minecraft.
