Creating an Interactive Community Map: What Are the Best Tools?

I'm working on a college project focused on developing an interactive media tool, and I would love some guidance on creating a community-driven map similar to 'wplace.live' or 'Queering the Map'. I am really struggling with where to start and what tools to use. Any suggestions on how I can achieve this?

For something simpler, you could use leaflet.js or Mapbox for the mapping part itself, then integrate it with a backend like Firebase or Supabase for user submissions. It's not too complex but offers flexibility.

You might want to check out the Japan Bear Incident Map, where they allow users to report bear sightings. It's a great example of community input. They used maplibre, which I strongly recommend over Mapbox and Google Maps. Those can get super expensive once you hit a certain scale! Feel free to ask if you have any questions about how they did it.

If you're looking for something more advanced, cesium is a solid choice. It can provide a full 3D globe experience or a 2D map, depending on what you need.
