Feeling Overwhelmed by AI at 42: Am I Missing Something?

I'm 42 years old and have always adapted well to rapidly changing technology—from the rise of the internet to social media. But now, I'm struggling with AI, especially ChatGPT. It feels like I'm just talking to Google. I'm skeptical about how it always seems to agree with me and never challenges my thinking—it feels too much like a hype man rather than a true conversation partner. When I imagined AI, I thought it would be more human-like, learning and growing with me. Instead, it feels soulless, like an encyclopedia.

When I see others claiming they've built friendships with AI or even blurry lines between reality and AI companionship, it makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if I've just aged out of adapting. Does it improve with a paid upgrade? Or am I simply missing how to interact with it? I love new tech but feel like AI is leaving me behind. Any advice?

You’re not behind the curve at all—you're just looking for something more meaningful in AI. Keep asking it deep questions to see how it responds. It might take time for it to adapt to your communicative style, but the potential is there. Try to be playful with it too; the more creative you get, the more engaging it can be!

I can see that! I suppose I just need to dive in and explore.

Got it! I’ll experiment more with my prompts and see where it goes.

You’re not outdated! The more you engage with AI, the more responsive and 'human' it can seem. I use it frequently to challenge my ideas and offer different perspectives, and I just ask it to be harshly honest with me. A bit of interaction can go a long way—just keep using it! I stick to the free version, but it adapts well over time. You'll find your groove!

That makes sense! I guess I just need to engage more.

It's true! Just don't expect too much at first; it gets better with more use.

It might help to rethink how you're prompting it! AI like ChatGPT can come off as overly agreeable because of its default settings. Try asking it to provide different perspectives or challenge your viewpoints. This can help make your interactions feel less like talking to a yes-man and more like having a real conversation. There are other AI tools out there too—apps like NotebookLM or Hivemind, which offer a more dynamic experience. Plus, if you go for the paid version, you can explore different models that might provide the depth you're looking for. Remember, AI is a tool to assist you; it might take some tweaking in how you use it!

Thanks for the resources, I was unsure of how to use it to suit my needs. I appreciate your insights!

NotebookLM sounds interesting, I might try that out!

If you're looking for something more nuanced, try customizing your settings or prompts. You can tell it to give you blunt or critical feedback instead of the usual support it defaults to. Don't hesitate to teach it how you want it to respond!

I definitely need to take control of my interactions with it!

You can also try giving it specific roles to play, like an expert in a field to provide a different angle.

Consider using AI as a tool rather than a friend. Focus on what you need from it—like help with coding projects, research, or brainstorming. By framing your requests as tasks rather than conversations, you'll likely get more useful responses. The structure of your queries can really shape the experience!

I didn’t think about it that way. Thanks for the clarity!

That's a good point! I've been stuck in a mindset thinking it should be like chatting with a friend.
