Hey everyone,
I graduated back in April 2024 from Waterloo with a degree in Computer Engineering. Most of my internships were in web development, so I aimed for roles in fullstack, backend, and frontend development. However, despite applying to around 1200 jobs, I've had no luck at all. I realize that compared to others, my effort seems minimal. I struggle with the thought of applying for jobs for long hours; just thinking about logging onto LinkedIn makes me feel nauseous.
Now, I'm entering the 20th month of unemployment, and I feel like I should consider changing my approach, but I'm not sure how to do that. I have limited experience outside web development, and I need guidance on what a resume for a computer engineering role should look like. I'm worried that being out of work for so long will hinder my chances, especially when I know I'm competing with other highly qualified candidates. I'm just looking for some advice or options that can help me avoid feeling like I have to end my pursuit of a career in software development.

Look, being unemployed for two years sounds really tough, but don't lose hope! Instead of seeing it as a negative, use this time to fill that gap with impactful projects, contribute to open source, or try new technologies. It’s about how you present your story. Focus on what you've been doing during this time to keep learning and growing!
You really need to make sure you’re not just submitting resumes without a plan. Take some time to work on personal projects or even a small side hustle. Employers want to see that you've been proactive during your time off, so show them what you've been up to!
Networking is key too! Many people find jobs through connections. Have you tried reaching out to people in the industry?
It’s a tough spot to be in, but have you thought about taking a part-time job in a different field? It could ease financial stress while you continue looking for software roles. Plus, you never know what connections you might make!
I totally get the frustration, but remember that it's tough all around right now. A friend of mine was in a similar boat for almost a year before finally landing a job. The market will improve, and it's important to stay positive!
What’s your take on what could change to improve the market?
Have you thought about diving into less competitive fields like hardware, firmware, or embedded systems? As a Computer Engineering graduate, there are plenty of opportunities outside web dev that might be worth exploring. Also, are you customizing your applications for each job you apply for, or just sending out the same resume everywhere?
First off, congrats on your graduation! While you wait for your dream job, have you considered freelancing? Working on client projects can help you build a portfolio and gain practical experience, which could make you more attractive to potential employers. Plus, showcasing your work can help with visibility in the job market!
Absolutely! Freelancing helped me tremendously when I was in a similar situation. It not only allowed me to develop my skills but also to create a portfolio that really impressed hiring managers. Definitely try it out!
Yes, and don't forget about open source contributions! This can further demonstrate your skills and involvement in the community.

And what have you been doing for two years? It might be a good time to evaluate that!
