Help! My Girlfriend’s Games Keep Crashing After Upgrading to Windows 11

I'm reaching out for help because my girlfriend has been dealing with frustrating game crashes ever since she upgraded to Windows 11 a few months ago. Before the upgrade, everything was running smoothly. Now, she's experiencing constant crashes—sometimes it's just a sudden return to the desktop or a black screen, and it's really been upsetting for her. The odd part is that it seems like the less graphically intensive games are crashing more often, like REPO and Dark Souls: Remastered, while others like Baldur's Gate 3 run fine but crash occasionally. The crashes usually happen just a few minutes after starting a game or even when launching them. We've made sure all drivers are updated and even performed a full Windows reinstall, but nothing seems to stick. I've seen Event ID 153 pop up in the Event Viewer every time it crashes, pointing to nvlddmkm, which adds to my confusion. Has anyone experienced this or have suggestions on what to try next?

I found a forum post that mentioned a fix for the nvlddmkm crash. It involved changing some settings in the BIOS related to the GPU or adjusting power settings for the NVIDIA control panel. It may not be easy, but it could be worth trying out—just be sure to back up important data before messing with any BIOS settings!

I had a similar issue after updating to Windows 11. Make sure you're running the latest version of Windows. You can check by typing ‘Winver’ in the Start menu. If you're still on an older version, sometimes newer updates have patches for these types of issues. Also, maybe consider checking the BIOS and see if there are any updates available for that as well.

It sounds like a tough situation! The Event ID 153 points to issues with your NVIDIA drivers or hardware, and given the age of your girlfriend's laptop, it’s worth considering if the driver might not be compatible with the newer Windows update. Have you tried fully uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers with a tool like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and then reinstalling the latest version? It can sometimes help resolve weird crashes like this. Also, as a side note, checking your RAM with a memory test tool could also rule out any hardware issues, in case that’s a factor here.
