How Could a Mesh-Based Radio Broadcast Network Work?

I'm curious about how we might bring back local radio broadcasts in a more modern way using a mesh network. Traditionally, you could just hop in your car and catch local news and community events on the radio. However, with local stations now mostly owned by big media conglomerates, it's tough to find any local content. The FCC isn't issuing many new radio licenses either, which makes the situation even harder.

What if we created a distributed broadcast network where local stations generate cryptographic keys, and a hashing algorithm helps determine the channel? Listeners could connect to each other and share the broadcast without all of them pulling directly from the main transmitter. Imagine using something like a Raspberry Pi for this!

I'm also wondering if using 802.11ah would be a viable option for this kind of setup, especially regarding raw frames. Ideas?

You're overthinking this. Everyone has a smartphone connected to the internet. Just create a radio app that streams local content based on your location, like selecting from local streams with GPS. The real challenge is getting people to produce the content and finding an audience, since many are skeptical of media companies these days.

The issue with proposals like this is that even if you set up local streams, they're often overshadowed by larger networks. A lot of local community news isn't carried on major platforms because they don't see the profit in it. Plus, things like birthdays and local events that used to be aired just won't make it through national syndication.

We already have the infrastructure with the internet, but it lacks the local touch! Most folks don’t even realize what's happening nearby. A local mesh network could allow everyone to broadcast and share real community news easily. Imagine tuning in without fussing around with websites — just straightforward radio content!

Could something like an Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network work for what you're envisioning? We need a more community-centric approach, since existing protocols often miss the essence of local communication.
