Is it Time to Upgrade My CPU Cooler for the Ryzen 7 5800X?

I'm currently using a Deepcool Gammaxx GT A-RGB cooler with my new Ryzen 7 5800X, and I'm concerned about overheating. When idle, the CPU's temperature hits around 68 degrees Celsius, and during gaming, it spikes to 90-92 degrees Celsius. I've replaced the thermal paste a month ago, but I'm feeling uneasy about these high temperatures. Should I consider upgrading the cooler, and if so, what would be a good replacement?

If the thermal paste is the factory stuff, it might be worth replacing it. I had a similar overheating issue with my 13600K because of poor thermal paste application. It might be just the cooler size that's limiting performance. If none of these fixes work, then upgrading to a bigger cooler could definitely help, as the Gammax GT is on the smaller side.

What’s your current airflow setup like? That could be part of the issue, especially with such high idle and gaming temps.

It's not unusual for the Ryzen 7 5800X to hit 90°C while gaming, but the idle temp of 68°C raises some red flags. Make sure your case has good airflow and check the fan speeds. Also, double-check that the cooler is seated properly. The thermal paste you used, Arctic MX-4, is solid, but just verify its coverage.

I've set my fans to ramp up to 100% if temps go above 80°C too. My CPU fan runs between 1491-1679 RPM, alongside a case fan at around 1741 RPM. It's a decent setup, but you might still want a more powerful cooler if these high temps keep up.

68°C idle does seem high! I max out at about 75°C when gaming with my 5800X. I did some research, and it appears the Gammaxx isn't the best for handling the heat from the 5800X. A good budget cooler option to consider is the Thermalright Phantom Spirit; it’s been working great for me while keeping temps in check.

I use a Deepcool Gammaxx 400 and have never seen temps hit 90°C, that's definitely thermal throttling territory. Have you thought about undervolting your CPU or using Eco Mode to lower the temps? I'm considering the Thermalright PS120SE for my setup to push performance further.
