Is Manual Hosting Worth the Hassle Compared to Managed Services?

I've been hosting several apps on AWS Elastic Beanstalk, but after realizing I couldn't create new free trial apps, I started exploring alternatives. I tried DigitalOcean and Hetzner, and while I initially felt comfortable navigating their consoles, I soon ran into challenges. None of these services offer built-in graphs for memory usage, so I had to rely on external tools like netdata, which was frustrating. File management has also been a hassle since they lack a built-in file manager, forcing me to use Filezilla. Logging isn't as straightforward either; AWS made that easy. I've hesitated to set up load balancing as the paths I've found seem overly complicated. Now I'm weighing whether I should return to AWS for projects needing reliable uptime, as I find myself spending a lot of time detailing apps rather than building new features. Are there any user-friendly solutions that have built-in tools without breaking the bank?

I totally get your frustration with manual setups; the time spent managing can detract from actually building. For most of my projects, I've opted for managed platforms despite the cost. Once you get used to AWS, it can actually be worth it if you're running multiple apps.

It really depends on what you’re doing. If you’re just running basic apps, Services like Hetzner can work just fine. But for anything serious, like handling user data, managed services are worth the extra expense for peace of mind, especially when issues arise at 2 AM.

Absolutely! I faced many issues with AWS as well. Proper configuration is key, otherwise, it can lead to a lot of headaches.

You should check out Coolify! It’s an open-source platform that lets you manage everything with a user-friendly interface. It works well on budget VPS options and I've been able to run my projects without a hitch since switching to it.

I saw Coolify too, but it felt too complex. Maybe I'll give it a second chance.

Coolify is fantastic! I use it on my Lightnode VPS for personal projects and it hasn't let me down.

How resource-intensive is it? Does it require a lot of CPU or memory?

If you're leaning towards VPS, keep in mind that with those, you manage everything yourself. You're not alone in this though; tons of people have faced similar issues. There are tools out there that can help simplify things, so don't feel discouraged.

Have others really managed to deploy successfully outside the Cloud? I've heard stories...

Yes, it's definitely possible! Many have managed that, but it does take some learning.

You’re hitting the classic 'cheap but DIY' wall here. Although Hetzner is great for value, it really lacks the hand-holding that some of the managed services provide.

Finding something cheap yet dependable can be tricky. I've moved all my applications from AWS and DigitalOcean to Hetzner, managing them myself. It works for my non-critical projects, but I know it could get pricey if I needed high redundancy. Remember that with services like AWS, you're really paying for the convenience of not having to deal with all the setup headaches.
