Hey everyone, I'm caught in a dilemma choosing between two GPUs right now, both from Gigabyte and designed for Thunderbolt 3 external enclosures. The 3080 10GB is priced at $350, while the 3080 Ti 12GB costs $450. I'm currently using a 1080 eGPU, but I feel like I'm hitting VRAM limits with my 1080p high/ultra settings. I'm looking for a GPU that can handle 1440p max settings comfortably for a few years before scaling back to 1080p. The performance difference between the two cards is about 10-15%. Is it really worth spending an extra $100 for the 3080 Ti? Should I also consider going for a 40-series card instead?

The 3080 Ti basically feels like a less efficient 4070, and I think it’s the bare minimum unless you’re mostly into esports titles that don’t require much VRAM. Still, I'd lean towards the 3080 12GB, which is a bit like a 3080 Super with that extra VRAM and more cores.
Honestly, I wouldn’t invest in upgrading from the 3080 10GB to a 12GB model, and I wouldn’t consider getting a 10GB card in a couple of years either. It might not be worth it.
I've got the 3080 10GB myself, but I'm hitting VRAM problems more often these days. I'd definitely suggest going for the 3080 Ti for that extra VRAM, especially if you want to game at higher settings.
If you have a Microcenter nearby, you could snag a 5060 Ti 16GB for around $489. But honestly, the 3080 Ti is the bare minimum I’d go for right now. If you can find a used 7800 XT for a similar price, that might be a better option overall.
Saw a 3080 12GB on sale at the Zotac store! Might be worth checking out if you're leaning that way.
