Received a Suspicious Email – Is It a Scam or What?

I got this bizarre email supposedly from my own address claiming they had a "video recording of me jerking off to highly controversial porn videos." I had to stop and laugh because, first off, I'm not a guy, and second, I don't watch porn at all! Now, I'm curious if there's a way to trace where this email actually came from. I'm sure I'm not the only one targeted by this, and they're asking for money. I'd like to report this and help prevent anyone from falling for the scam.

Just out of curiosity, how do they manage to send an email that looks like it’s from my own address?

If you want to find out more about the sender, check your email service's features. You can usually find the real email address hidden in the email header. I once struggled with a similar situation but used a tool to analyze the header, and it revealed the true source of the email.

But the email header just shows my email, right?

This is just a typical spoofed sextortion scam. My advice? Just delete it and don’t engage. It’s best to ignore these kinds of messages completely.

Sounds like a classic scam to me! You're definitely not alone; I've seen similar emails before. Honestly, it's probably not worth your time trying to investigate too deeply since there are likely tons of people getting the same thing.

I guess that makes sense! I’ve just never received anything like this before, so I was a bit surprised to see it pop up in my inbox.

This is just another average extortion scam. You can even check the bitcoin address they provide to see if anyone’s actually sent money. Just search for "bitcoin balance check" and enter the address; it'll show you the transaction details, since everything is public.
