Starting My Linux Journey: Cloning vs Clean Install

Hey everyone! I've been wanting to get into Linux for a while now, but I've been hesitant because of concerns regarding cloning my OS and picking the right distribution. Here's my setup: I've got an Intel i7-9750H with 16GB of RAM and a GTX 1660 Ti with 6GB VRAM. Currently, I have a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD with Windows 11 installed. I also have a 1TB SATA SSD for storage, but that's not the focus right now.

My plan is to swap my 512GB SSD for a 1TB M.2 SSD and clone everything over. I've chosen Rescuezilla for cloning because it's free and there's a guide for it. Do you think this is a solid choice? Has anyone run into issues with it?

Once I have the new SSD cloned, I want to set up a dual boot with Linux. The main reason to switch is to learn ROS2, as I've heard it runs better on Linux, especially Ubuntu. I also play games like Witcher 3 and Rocket League, and I need to keep Windows for some software like Fusion360. I've seen that ROS2 can be installed on Mint too, but I haven't found much feedback on that. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the best distro for my needs. Thanks for helping out!

Mint is actually quite similar to Ubuntu since it offers a lot of the same packages, just without those pesky snap packages by default. The desktop environment is different, but you should find that everything you can do on Ubuntu works on Mint too. Just keep in mind, Ubuntu has better support for features like fractional scaling which might be useful if you're using a high-res monitor.

I totally agree! Mint is beginner-friendly, but remember it still uses X11 instead of Wayland, which might not be ideal for gaming. Ubuntu with Wayland is actually a good option!
