Thinking About Switching to Linux on My Mac – Where to Start?

I've got an M1 MacBook Air that I really love, and I've been enjoying macOS a lot! I grew up using Windows, but after a few years with Macs, I've become more tech-savvy and I've developed a big interest in Linux. I'm super curious about installing Linux on my laptop but honestly have no clue where to begin.

I know dual-booting is an option, but I'm not sure if I could make Linux my only operating system - is that even possible? Should I consider it?

Also, which Linux distros work best with Mac hardware? I've heard that macOS manages RAM better than Windows, so I'm wondering if that would change if I switch to Linux. Ideally, I'd like a distro that has a similar look to macOS, so I don't feel too lost in the transition.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Try using UTM to run Linux as a virtual machine. I used to do that with old Macs and it worked fine! It’s open-source, which is a plus if you're getting into Linux. Just keep in mind it might be a bit slow depending on your hardware.

I find it a bit sluggish too, but it could be because my Mac doesn't have much RAM. Just something to consider!

Honestly, I've heard mixed things about running Linux on Macs. Some people think it won't perform well. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, but you could definitely give it a shot if you're adventurous!

You might want to look into Asahi Linux. It's specifically designed for running Linux on Apple Silicon, so that could be a good start for you!
