Trying to Get My Mom to Switch to Linux – Is It Possible?

I'm really fed up with Microsoft and the direction tech companies are taking us, and I want to help my mom move away from that. She's not very tech-savvy and called me while I was in the middle of a Linux install on my own computer, asking about the new Surface Pro. I mentioned my concerns about its privacy features and jokingly suggested Linux. Now, I'm thinking about setting her up with a dual-boot system too, but I've got serious doubts given that she's not experienced with technology. She's eyeing a 13-inch touchscreen laptop, but I know dual-booting is easier with separate drives which she won't have. How can I set this up for her without it turning into a nightmare of tech issues? Any advice would really be appreciated!

You mentioned your mom's usage scenario. If it's primarily for work with certain apps, maybe she should stick to Windows for that purpose. Linux can be great, but it really depends on what she needs it for. If it’s a hassle, why change what's working for her?

You could go for the Framework laptop which has a touchscreen option. It's a decent choice for Linux since it's designed for it. Plus, dual-booting is completely doable on a single drive, just make sure to set things up properly during the install process so GRUB doesn’t become a headache later!

Honestly, I put Linux on my mom's computer when she turned 81 and she’s been fine! It’s possible; it just depends on how you introduce it to her. Maybe start simple, like letting her try it out first without full installation. If she’s comfortable, go for it!

I feel you, my 71-year-old parents have been using Linux for almost a decade too, and they’ve never looked back. Just keep it simple and intuitive!

Look, it sounds like your mom wants a Windows laptop, and that’s okay! If she needs it for work, help her get what she needs. Linux is great, but if your mom isn't interested, it might just complicate her life. Respect her preference!

True, we can’t ignore their needs. Sometimes it’s best to go with what they're comfortable using, rather than pushing for something new.

I admire your ambition! My parents are tech-challenged too, but they just browse and play simple games. Think about setting them up with a lightweight Linux distro that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. Mint or Zorin might be good options!

Zorin is awesome! It has a dual boot option that makes it easy to set up alongside Windows if they want to keep both.
