What Could Be Causing My Headphones to Cut Out When Used with an Audio Interface?

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 80 Ohm headphones connected to a Behringer audio interface, but I'm experiencing some frustrating audio issues. The sound cuts out intermittently, about once every 15-20 seconds, lasting for about a second each time. Interestingly, when I plug the headphones directly into the jack on my PC tower, they work just fine. I'd prefer to use the audio interface for better control over my sound. Is there a chance I need a preamp, or could there be something else causing this problem? I've searched for solutions online without much luck, so I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out!

It sounds like the issue might be with the audio interface itself rather than the headphones. You didn't mention the model number, so it's tough to give specific advice. If you share that, we might be able to dig deeper into potential issues related to that specific model.

This seems more like a problem with stability or impedance rather than a power issue. Sometimes, headphone amps in interfaces don't play well with certain loads. Since you're experiencing cuts off at regular intervals, it could be a buffer underrun or driver issue. I would check your drivers, try different USB ports, and adjust the sample rate or buffer size to see if it helps. It’s notable that the PC jack works fine; those often have simpler designs that handle a variety of loads better. Before investing in a preamp, troubleshooting these areas might lead you to a quicker solution!
