I'm currently working as an IT Support Specialist at a community development financial institution (CDFI). Recently, I had a discussion with our Systems Engineer and Security Engineer about our infrastructure. They know I'm interested in Azure, and they encouraged me to think of a project or feature to implement since we're only utilizing about 20-25% of Azure's services. We have the basics covered like identity and security policies, a domain controller, virtual machines, and a migrated file server. I'm looking for ideas on what I could work on to gain experience and potentially enhance our Azure setup. Any suggestions for projects that would help me get hands-on experience?

Have you considered setting up an internal status page for your applications? It wouldn’t just be a dashboard with metrics, but a simple page that shows whether applications are up or down. Starting with an app service and database for this could be great since it allows you to choose the programming language you’re comfortable with, and it’s relatively straightforward to manage. This project might seem minor, but it can become one of your most essential tools, especially when hooked up to an alerting system. A lot of developers have complex alerts, but few check a simple status endpoint that actual users would access.

That sounds useful! How do you usually get notified if something goes down? Can you share more details about how you set it up?
