I've got an older HP desktop with a Core i3-3220 CPU and a low-end GPU. I've added 14 GB of DDR3 RAM to it, even though that's a bit of an odd amount. I've heard mixed opinions about whether an i3 can still hold its own in 2025, so I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm considering what operating system to install or how best to set up this machine. Any suggestions on what it can handle or tips for its use would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely pay attention to the desktop environment over just the distro. XFCE is a great lightweight choice, so I'd suggest going with Linux Mint XFCE and see how it runs on your system!
I’d recommend trying out Linux Mint. It's light on system resources and works great on older hardware like yours. Plus, it has a user-friendly interface that should make things easier for you.
Yeah, the desktop environment matters a lot too! Using a lighter one like XFCE can make a big difference in performance.

I’ve thought about using a second desktop for retro gaming emulation. Do you think it would perform well with my setup?
