I just created a spam account on Instagram using my email but not my phone number. Despite that, the app is suggesting accounts of people whose numbers I have, even though I didn't provide my number during sign-up. I'm concerned that if my account gets suggested to these individuals, they might figure out it's me. Why is Instagram able to do this, and is there any way to prevent it? Thanks in advance for all the replies!

If your email is linked to your phone number in any way, like through a Google account, Instagram could recommend those people based on your contacts. They often pull from saved details, not just what you input at signup.
It sounds like you may have given Instagram access to your phone contacts. The app uses that info to suggest accounts it thinks you might know, even if you didn't sign up with your number.
