Why is my 3.5mm cable causing weird audio issues with my headphones?

I just picked up a male-to-male 3.5mm to dual 3.5mm aux cable to connect to my headphones. The plugs fit perfectly, but when I tested them using a stereo sound test on YouTube, I noticed something odd: the audio played through both sides of my headphones even when the test should only send sound to the right side. Plus, when I tried to test the left side, there was silence. How is it possible for this to happen if all parts seem functional?

It sounds like you might have a mono cable instead of a stereo one. Sometimes the plug can look dual-channel, but if it’s wired for mono, both channels will transmit through one side. You can tell by looking closely at the jack; if there’s only one ring, it’s likely mono. Just double-check the specs, and you might need to grab a true stereo one instead.

Actually, I looked at the cable, and both ends seem to have dual channels. So I’m not sure if that's the issue.
