Why Is My Laptop’s RAM Constantly High Even With Few Programs Running?

I've noticed that my laptop's RAM usage has been unusually high for the past few weeks. My laptop has 16GB of RAM, but it's often over 90% utilized, which causes some browser tabs to crash due to memory overload. When I check the Task Manager, it seems like only about 3GB of RAM is being used by the visible tasks. So I'm left wondering, where is the rest of my RAM going? I'm using a Windows laptop and currently running Windows 11. I also checked for any pending updates, and everything is good there.

Give your OS a bit of leeway when it comes to managing RAM. Windows often preloads data that it predicts you might need, which can look like high usage. But if tasks aren’t actually hitting that hard on memory, maybe there's another issue at play. Letting the system handle it usually helps!

Yeah, but when it shows that much usage, it feels like something's wrong. Should I be worried?

It's normal for your operating system to use a lot of RAM. Windows 11 is designed to utilize available memory aggressively to keep things running smoothly. However, if you're encountering tab crashes, it might not solely be a RAM issue. Keep an eye on any background processes that might be consuming resources, and consider closing unnecessary applications or browser tabs.

What about checking for any unwanted software running in the background? It could help free up some RAM.

Windows 11 does tend to show high RAM usage even when idle. I've got a big setup with 128GB of RAM, and I see around 50-60% used right at baseline. It’s just how it operates—so while 90% seems high, it might not be as concerning as it appears. Just keep an eye on your applications and consider adjusting your settings if it really starts to affect performance.
