Can I recover an email account after the provider has shut down?

I used an email address ending in @2007gmail.com between 2013 and 2016, but it wasn't part of Google Gmail. I recently found out that the service no longer exists. I'm curious if there's a realistic way to recover my email account when the original provider or domain is completely defunct. Specifically, I want to know:
- Do mailboxes or user data typically still exist after an email provider shuts down?
- Is there any way to recover the emails without access to the original provider?
- If I were to re-register that domain (if it becomes available), would I ever regain access to my old email accounts, or is that data permanently lost?

Unfortunately, it sounds like your data is gone for good. When an email provider shuts down, they typically either delete all the data or let it sit on servers that eventually get wiped or discarded. Even if you re-register the domain, it won't bring any of the old server data back. It's really a tough break.

Sorry, but once a provider shuts down, you can probably kiss your old emails goodbye. They'll either delete the data or it will just rot away on old servers. Even if you could buy the old domain, you'd just end up with a copycat address, not your old emails.

That makes sense. It’s definitely a bummer! I'll try looking through any old computers to see if there's anything saved locally.

If you ever set up your email on a local device using POP3, you might still have some emails saved on that device, even if you can't download any new messages anymore. It's worth checking any old backups or devices you might have for remnants of your mailbox.

I feel your pain. Unless the email provider moved their services to another domain that still operates, the servers holding your data are likely down too. Just re-registering the domain won't restore your old emails, only let you start fresh with new ones. Sorry about that!

Nope, if you get the domain back, you'll just have the email address, but the data itself is long gone. They wouldn't keep old emails for a decade if they're out of business, unfortunately.
