I'm having some real issues with sudden ping spikes during gaming. Normally, my ping is around 50-60ms, which is fine, but every 5-10 seconds, I'll hit a massive spike up to 300ms. This lasts for about a second and is really starting to affect my gameplay.
I tested the connection to my router (192.168.0.1) and confirmed the problem is with my laptop. When I ping my router from my iPhone, the response time is smooth at 9-12ms, but my laptop fluctuates wildly between 1-2ms and extreme spiking moments. Here are some pings I recorded:
- 315ms
- 3ms
- 4ms
- 224ms
- 484ms
- ...
For context, my laptop specs are:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7445HS
- GPU: Nvidia RTX 4050
- RAM: 16GB DDR5
- OS: Windows 11 Home
- Model: HP Victus 15 fb3xxx
I've tried a bunch of fixes like changing DNS settings to Cloudflare and Google, resetting the network, updating drivers, tweaking some registry settings, and more. I even disabled both 2.4G and 5G on the router, set up 'Band Steering Exclusion' in my router, and performed various commands in CMD. It's all getting a bit overwhelming!
Any ideas on what else I can try? Thanks!

Make sure you've got your router's firmware updated! Sometimes, just a simple firmware fix can resolve weird issues like you’re experiencing. And if the router is in a tricky spot, consider rearranging things to reduce distance or obstacles.
Are you gaming using Ethernet or WiFi? If it’s WiFi, you might face interference or driver issues. Getting an Ethernet cable could really help you pinpoint if it's a hardware issue or just weak WiFi signal.
It sounds like this could be a problem with your network adapter or the router. If you're still getting lag while pinging the router with Ethernet, then it's definitely a hardware issue. Since you're on WiFi and you've mentioned distance issues, interference could also be a big factor here. Try getting closer to the router or, if possible, use a direct Ethernet connection to rule out signal issues or interference. It could also be that a background process is using up your bandwidth, so check for any unnecessary apps running when you experience these spikes.
