How can I use my side project at work without conflicts?

I'm a front-end developer and part of a small team where we wear multiple hats. I've built a tool that I'm really excited about, but it requires cooperation from my fellow engineers since it benefits more than just my work. I want to use this paid tool at work without making it seem like I'm promoting my side business or creating a conflict of interest. Is there a safe and legal way to do this?

I totally get your concern! A lot of folks use their personal GitHub for work, but I recommend keeping those separate. If you've cleared things with HR about running your side business, then just stay in the clear and avoid using company assets for the side project.

You might consider pitching the tool to your team just like you would any other paid tool, even if you have a stake in it. Just be upfront about your affiliation. Most importantly, bring it to stakeholders and see if they’re interested. After that, checking with HR would be a smart move to ensure everything's above board.

Honestly, it's pretty straightforward—disclose any potential conflicts of interest and let your employers decide whether to use the tool or not. Open communication goes a long way!

Keep in mind any intellectual property agreements you may have signed. If you developed your tool using company resources, they might own it. If it’s completely your own creation, you still could notify them about it without giving away too much. Just try to keep your work and personal projects separate to avoid any issues.
