How to Choose the Right Capacity UPS for My PC?

I recently tested my new PC under load using my Tripp Lite OMNI1500LCDT 1500VA UPS by hitting the test button, and it tripped, causing everything to shut down. The specs say it has an "810W" rating, but when I tested the load, the display fluctuated between 350 and 400 watts. Clearly, my current UPS is insufficient for my setup. What should I be looking for in a UPS to ensure it can handle my PC efficiently? Any specific recommendations would be appreciated!

This is a common issue with UPS units where the VA rating doesn't translate to actual watt capacity. Your 1500VA unit with only 810W capacity is typical. Most consumer UPS systems have a power factor around 0.6, meaning you only get about 60% of the VA rating in usable watts. For a gaming rig using 350-400W, I'd recommend getting a UPS rated at least 2200VA for adequate headroom. Brands like APC or CyberPower have reliable options in their Back-UPS Pro or PFC series. Always check the actual watt rating over the VA rating and aim for 50% more capacity than your peak load.

Hitting the test button triggers a self-test, which might not directly reflect how much load your PC puts on the UPS. You should check the manual, particularly page 7, which mentions that if the test fails, there will be an alarm and you might need to replace the battery if it doesn’t pass after charging. If your UPS is 3-4 years old, it’s worth checking if the battery needs replacing as it might have degraded.

If your UPS is 3-4 years old, the batteries are likely due for a replacement. Batteries degrade over time, even without warnings. It's a good idea to check on that.

If your UPS has a stepped sine wave output, it might cause compatibility issues with some power supplies, leading to shutdowns. Consider switching to a pure sine wave UPS, especially if you're running sensitive equipment.
