Why Am I Hearing Echoes During Voice Calls?

I've been experiencing a strange issue during voice calls. When I talk on Discord with friends, some of them hear an echo of their own voice when I'm using my external microphone. I've tested my setup with different friends, and it appears that the echo happens only when there are other users on PCs or laptops in the call. I do use headphones, so I thought that might prevent the microphone from picking up the call audio, but it seems to not be the case. Yesterday, I was on a call where one friend didn't hear any echo, but later when I switched calls, a different friend on a PC said he heard it. I also tested this on other platforms like Messenger, and the echo issue persists there too. Could this be related to my equipment or a setting on my computer?

What brand of microphone and headphones are you using? Sometimes different models have better noise isolation features than others.

I'm using SteelSeries Arctis Prime headphones and a Jertech T-20 microphone. The echo isn't only happening with headphones; it happens with speakers too. So I’m guessing it’s something on the PC side.

It sounds like your setup might still allow some sound leakage. Just because you’re using headphones doesn’t mean the mic won’t pick up sound from them. Try muting your headphones while talking; that might help identify if the echo is still there.

I did that, and they said they still heard the echo.

Sometimes the mic can be too sensitive, picking up noises that you might not even notice. I suggest using the mic that’s built into your headphones because those usually include features to cancel out sounds from the speakers. If your headset mic isn't working well, that could cause issues too.

My headphones' mic has some problems and barely picks up sound, so I can't really rely on it. But yeah, it seems like the mic isn't very sensitive to just the sounds in the room.
